Use of Abrasive Garnet Sand

Mainly industrial usesGarnet sand is a good abrasive media, and a common replacement for silica sand in Sand blasting machine . Garnet abrasive grains and mesh 80 which are sharpened rounder are more suitable for such blasting handling. Garnet Abrasive Sand is a group of iron aluminum silicate homogeneous minerals having similar properties. And non-hygroscopic, sharp angular shape, inert, slightly magnetic, not soluble in water, translucent, friable to tough, and contains no free chemicals. All oxides and dioxides are combined chemically. The iron and aluminum are partially replaceable by calcium, magnesium, and manganese.

Abrasive Garnet Sand Properties:

  • Almandine: Fe3Al2Si3O12
  • Mohs scale hardness: 6.5–7.5
  • Other characteristics: variable magnetic attracti…
  • Specific gravity: 3.1–4.3

It is Mixed with very high-pressure water, garnet is used to cut steel, other materials in water jets.

There are three types-

  • aluminum garnet,
  • iron garnet
  • chromium garnet.

Abrasive garnet sand produce a super clean surface finish with a uniform profile that is virtually free of particle embedment. Clean surface finish and uniform profile means better coating adhesion and longer coating life. Garnet abrasives media are harder, heavier and more durable than many other mineral blast abrasives. Barton’s garnet abrasives cut faster resulting in rapid job com-pletion with reduced abrasive consumption, handling and disposal costs, and are ideally suited to recycling; typically providing three to five turns, making it one of the most economical mineral abrasives on the market.
